though I proclaim to have a need for hearing music I've never heard before, I often do let weird little prejudices interfere with hearing some bands' music. Take Cradle of Filth for example. Heard the name, seen some images at Hot Topic...kinda wrote 'em off as a "Mall Metal" band. Well, today I'm gonna listen to 'em. Campy so far, but there are some redeeming aspects too so far. Never understanding why alcohol was legal and marijuana wasn't, I'm hopeful that Proposition 19 will pass tomorrow. Measure B here in the LBC will tax it in line with other intoxicants. Again, hopeful, though steeled for my usual election-day letdown. And if there are any tea party folks that don't vote this in, they are indeed hypocrites. This measure will take the guns and criminal element out of this MULTI-MILLON DOLLAR trade, and the most recent study expects the street value of cultivated weed to drop 80%! Wake up America -- if weed isn't legalized, we should return to prohibition. The only difference between marijuana and alcohol in my experience is that no one gets violent when smoking pot.

bought a 1972 Suburban 350/TH350 C10 Custom, and drove the Lincoln to the Belmont Shore Car Show for a nice day with my daughter. The Lincoln sure handled heavy traffic and hills like a champ! What a car (don't wanna, but have to sell it -- got a $3000 offer, but holding out for a few more weeks).

...the Lincoln runs! Spent some time with it this weekend, hotwired it, then floored it with my left hand while I was upside down beneath the dashboard! Ignition! Spark! RPMs increasing, dust and exhaust and rust in a tornado of VICTORY! ...until all the excitement got the fuel pump (which I'd temporarily disabled, see pic below) to start working, which shot old gas all over the front of the engine and made all of the belts jump their pulleys! Still, I'm counting this one as a victory.

So the boss let me put the car at work for a month, until it runs or gets towed-out. Upon closer inspection, I am stoked: aside from a little wiring redo, the car is totally original from front to back, carb is clean and the engine compartment matches *exactly* the 1958 brochure photo! No bodywork is evident anywhere on the car, and all the chrome is there and looking good. Pic is of the 2010 S1000RR; thought it was a nice contrast with the 52 year-old Conti., both having spikey tailfins. I woke-up just now dreaming of how to fix the ignition switch behind the dashboard.

Took the kids to their 1st airshow. It was a good one; met my parents there, had a fantastic time. I cried, as usual. Shannon said it was an early father's day present. Accepted.

Their flying f-86; if you don't think this airplane is amazing, you are beyond help. My favorite airplane since I was little.
Chumby climbed right past the C-47's pilot and took a seat while I fumbled with the camera.

P-51, 2 Lightnings, and an F-16. How stoked is that F-16 pilot to be surrounded by the history of his job? I'd say pretty stoked, lucky bastard. Also amazing were the Horsemen, doing loops and crazy dives in their 65 year-old Mustangs in blue-angels-esque formation, the wing-walker and all the WW2 reinactors (the Nazis has a Zundapp sidecar rig, spoke German -creepy- and had a real MP-40!), while the Russians had a hot girl soldier and lots of Mosin-Nagants!

I have a pal, Justin, that I see 3 or 4 times a year, at most. He's busy as a mofo, has a family, kids, etc.; same with me. His business is British bikes. Anyway, he needed some ABS diag on his daily-rider, so he came on down to the LBC. As he is en route, I get a phone call from Patty, asking about her deceased husband's 1975 BMW R90/6. Fair market value, parts sources, etc. She describes the bike to a point that makes me personally interested, and since the bike is 5 blocks away(!), I ride on over to check it out. It's great, perfect, and EXACTLY like it left Bayericsh MotorWerken in 1975! Also bitchin' is her hubby's collection of Brit iron form the 60s & 70s, including this little gem:
So, I call Justin, and give him directions to my location. He proceeds to walk through the lady's backyard and visually ID front wheels, frames, models, which Patty is furiously writing-down for future reference. Anyway, it was an amazing coincidence that she called me on the exact day he was in town. Long story short, he bought the beezer, 5 60s Triumph frames, and an assortment of various wheels from her, and picked em up the next morning. Me? I'm trying not to buy the R90.

So my wife swings-by the farmer's market that our friend runs yesterday, just to say hi and procure some fresh veggies. Well, since the vendors were packing-up, they were dumping lots of perfectly-fine food. 25 pounds of strawberries and 10 more of celery, red cabbage, zucchini, blueberries etc! We prepared the strawberries and threw 'em in the blender, then froze it all. The celery went right into the evening's bitchen' soup. The rest? It went to the chickens and rabbits and pig. Looks like Shannon will start selling her soap there (as they've wanted her to do all along), and bring home the farmer's leftovers from now on! It was a kick-ass end to the weekend.

P.S. If you’re not familiar with the Czechoslovakian Tatra T87, it’s a rear engine, air-cooled V8 with a dorsal fin down the back. The Czech Batmobile. We bought it “junk” nine years ago and finished its restoration (in the Czech Republic, at a shop in the town where the car was originally built) in 2009. Tatras were the only civilian cars still in production during WWII, and this is one of 3,023 made over a fifteen-year period. Ours is one of roughly 100 surviving in the world. Osmivalec was brought to this country by a US serviceman after the War, sat as a broken-down used-car-lot lure for who-knows-how-long, wallowed axle-deep in manure for over a decade, and then stood outdoors in the snow of Upstate New York for ten more years. From its “parts-car only” “not restorable” status we spent almost a decade restoring it. It runs, it stops. And it could win the contest. Vote Tatra! Vote today!

Having trouble sourcing parts for your 1927/40/59/76 Chevy/Ford/Pontiac/Peugeot? Aw, poor baby... try building old airplanes, like these guys. The New Zealand outfit The Vintage Aviator has a super-focused and amazing ambition; to make airplanes from 1914-1918 a flying reality in our times. Ninety-plus years of time-marching-on would put a kink in your plans, and eventually, you'd get so sick of looking for old rusty splintery, dry-rotted relics, you'd decide to start re-popping everything you needed, like they have. Everything. Handcrafted and built like it was then, from the original schematics! If you roam around their site for 10 minutes and are not impressed, you have no soul.

Last year we sold a bike to Ziggy Marley; this F800GS. He's painted the thing fittingly, wouldn't you say? If you've been a long-time reader of this blog, you'll recall that my 'lil Honda's name was all set to be "the Steppin' Razor," but had to be changed at paintin'-time because, when translated into Japanese, it had inescapable drug and vampirical references. The best part is that when our porter Randy wheeled Ziggy's bike in the door, my iPod started playing some mellow Bad Brains reggae, as if some mystical dub-auora surrounds it! Well, we got sniped at the last second (lost by $99), and the bike will leave California, headed for Maryland.

A5. How do libertarians differ from "conservatives"?

For starters, by not being conservative. Most libertarians have no interest in returning to an idealized past. More generally, libertarians hold no brief for the right wing's rather overt militarist, racist, sexist, and authoritarian tendencies and reject conservative attempts to "legislate morality" with censorship, drug laws, and obnoxious Bible-thumping. Though libertarians believe in free-enterprise capitalism, we also refuse to stooge for the military-industrial complex as conservatives are wont to do.

On a related note, what has voting Libertarian done for me this last 18 years?
Ha! It's given me loads of self-satisfaction and the right to bitch at the current states-of-affairs. Though I admit that Bob Barr was a pretty weak contender for pres. versus Mr. Obama (whom I voted for), I've towed the party line. Oh, to have a well-spoken and coherent president -- it was too much to resist!

3rd time's a charm: the repeated (and elusive) brake failure has been tracked to the ABS control unit. This is a $1500 piece of 20-year-old technology. The car itself is a $500, 20-year-old piece of...technology. The solution? Buy another entire 1991 Legacy from CL and take the needed part from what is probably a better car? Right you are! ...but no one is selling one atm...so on to plan B...which turned-out to be legacycentral bbs to make new friends...folks dedicated to 1st generation Subaru Legacies, and hope that they've got a used unit for sale. Keep your fingers crossed; meanwhile, my beloved Subaru sits in Costa Mesa awaiting a donor.

Every now and then, I'll click it and get directed to some emo-fixie blog from some guy in Portland just discovering the Velvet Underground, or to some mountain biker, ex-courier dude's blog. Always about bikes, that next-blog button is. Try it, I'll wait. OK, see? A bicycle blog. I'm not anti-bike as many of you know; I actually got the entire punk population of the greater Long Beach area on bikes for a few years. But I digress. AIRSTREAM: Finally went to see the $1000 overlander. It is beautiful and I want it. Too bad it's only worth $400 to me, which I told the owner (with all due respect), and haven't heard from since. And it really is a $1000 mistake, but for four-hundy, a dream come true. Today I see it relisted on CL for $1200. Best of luck Noel, you seem like a nice guy, and if I win the lotto, I'll be right over.
